This interdisciplinary group led by Tom Quinn includes faculty and students from the departments of Astronomy and Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington.
With support from the NSF,
we also are collaborating with the
Parallel Programming Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on the development of Parallel tools for Cosmological N-body simulations
Analysis of simulations of comets in the Oort Cloud by Nathan Kaib and
Tom Quinn have identified an overlooked mechanism for delivering comets into
Earth crossing orbits. This puts tight constraints on the number of comets in
the inner Oort cloud, and therefore the contribution of these comets to life
threating impacts. See the UW Press Release.
Simulations of disk galaxies by Rok Roskar, Victor DeBattista and Tom Quinn
show how stars like the Sun could migrate over great distances in the
Milky Way. See the
UW
Press Release.
Announcing release 2.0 of ChaNGa, a
massively parallel cosmological
N-body code, developed in collaboration with the Parallel Programming Laboratory.
